FAQs

Why do aquariums need filtration?

All aquariums need filtration in order to maintain the health of the fish and other aquatic life within. Good filtration helps to remove chemicals, and waste products that accumulate in freshwater aquariums. This helps to keep the water clean, clear, and free from harmful substances.

Without proper filtration, the water can become murky, smelly, oxygen levels can drop, and dangerous toxins can build up. This can create an unhealthy environment for fish and other aquatic life in the aquarium.

Another important part of keeping a healthy aquarium is to learn about the nitrogen cycle. Our guide walks you through everything you need to know.

Is too much filtration bad for an aquarium?

There’s no such thing as having ‘too much filtration’. In fact, many aquariums can have multiple filters, such as sponge filters.

How does an aquarium filter work?

A filter is an important product for a fish tank, because it cleans and oxygenates the water continuously. This helps to keep the fish healthy and alive, in essence it’s a life support product for your fish which is on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Which type of filtration system is best for aquariums?

There are many different types of aquarium filters available on the market. The most popular filters include internal filters, under-gravel filters, sponge filters, and air-powered filters. Each of these has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it is important to evaluate which type is best for your particular aquarium setup.

Internal Cartridge Filter – one of the most popular types of filtration for aquariums. They are relatively easy to install and maintain, making them an ideal choice for beginner aquarists.

External Power Filter – positioned outside the aquarium, most of the time inside the aquarium cabinet. These filters use an external motor and primer. This type of filter is ideal for larger tanks, as it offers more powerful filtration.

Undergravel Filter – these internal filters are installed beneath the gravel substrate in an aquarium and are air powered. This helps to remove debris, uneaten food, and fish waste from the water column.

Corner Power Cartridge Filter – these internal filters are designed to fit in the corner of an aquarium, providing powerful filtration with minimal space.

Power Filter (Sponge) – a great internal choice for small tanks, as they provide mechanical, biological and chemical filtration in a compact package.

How long do aquarium filters last?

A filters lifespan depends on a variety of factors, including the type of filter and the quality of maintenance.

For cartridge filters, the cartridges should be replaced every month (28 days) the floss will become blocked with trapped material and the carbon capacity for removing toxins will become exhausted. The Algaway cartridge’s ability to remove algae food will be exhausted. Replace both every month to keep your aquarium healthy, clean, clear and algae free.

Why not set a reminder in your calendar or set a day each month to service your filter?

How often should I replace my filter cartridges?

In order to ensure that your fish tank filter is providing the best possible filtration, the cartridges should be replaced every month (28 days). The frequency of filter cleaning depends on factors such as the size of the tank, large messy fish and how often you clean the tank. Ensure you have the right size filter for your tank by checking the performance data & chart on the filter packaging.

To determine the best schedule for your aquarium, it is important to consult a knowledgeable aquarist or aquatic retailer.

How do I know when to clean my aquarium filter?

Knowing when to change your aquarium filter is an important part of maintaining a healthy environment for your fish. Indicators include:

  • Decrease in water clarity
  • Increase in algae growth
  • Decrease in water flow
  • Death or illness to you fish
  • Unusual odours coming from the aquarium.

Why is my aquarium filter so loud?

If your aquarium filter is making loud noises, there could be several potential causes:

  • Clogged intake cover, tube or impeller
  • Air bubble stuck in the intake pipe
  • Loose screws or parts
  • High flow rate
  • Issue with the motor
  • Venturi stuck on
  • Filter is touching an object in the tank (vibration)
  • General wear and tear (Impellor need’s replacing)

To diagnose and fix the issue, you should first try cleaning out any debris or algae that has built up in the filter.

You should also check for any blockages in the intake or outflow pipes, as well as check for any air bubbles that could be caught in the intake pipe. If the problem persists, you may need to take your filter to a professional for more thorough maintenance.

Can I turn off my aquarium filter at night?

It’s not recommended to turn off your aquarium filter at night. Filters work more efficiently when they are running continuously.

This helps to keep the water temperature and chemistry more stable, while also providing a consistent flow of oxygenated water throughout the aquarium. Additionally, turning off your filter can disrupt the beneficial bacteria that help to maintain a healthy environment for your fish.
