Setting up your aquarium filter

No aquarium is complete without a reliable filtration system. It plays a crucial role in keeping water levels at their best and maintaining a healthy environment for your fish and plants alike.

In this guide, we’ll look at how to set up an aquarium filter as well as some of the most common types of filters available on the market.

How to set up an aquarium filter

You don’t have to be an expert to install an aquarium filter. Once you’ve set up your tank, it’s time to add a filter, here’s what to do:

1. Choose a filter

The first step is to select the right filter for your aquarium size and type. There are several types of filters, including:

  • Hang-on-Back Filters: These are easy to install and maintain, making them ideal for beginners. They hang on the back of the tank and draw water through a tube.
  • Power filters: These are more powerful and can handle larger tanks. They often include various stages of filtration, such as mechanical, chemical, and biological.
  • Cartridge Filters: These filters use replaceable cartridges that contain filter media. They are convenient but require regular replacement.
  • Undergravel Filters: These filters sit underneath the substrate of the aquarium and use a combination of water flow and beneficial bacteria to break down waste.

2. Fill the tank

Before you can add your filter, you need to fill your fish tank with water. If you’re using tap water, make sure to use a water conditioner to get rid of harmful chemicals, such as chlorine, which can be harmful to your fish.

There’s a good rule of thumb to follow when filling your tank:

  • For tropical fish, allow 1 cm of adult-size fish (excluding fins and tail) for each litre of water.
  • For cold-water fish, allow 0.5cm of adult-size fish (excluding fins and tail) for each litre of water.

You can also fill your tank with plants and decorations before installing the filter to create a more natural environment. Make sure the substrate or decorations do not obstruct the filter’s intake.

3. Install the filter

Your filter should be positioned above the water level so it can draw water into the system. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation:

  • For hang-on-back filters: Attach the filter to the back of the aquarium by securing it with clips or screws, making sure the intake tube is submerged in water.
  • For power filters: Position the filter inside or on the side of the aquarium according to its design, connecting it to a power source and ensuring that all hoses are securely attached.
  • For cartridge filters: Insert the filter media into the filter, make sure it fits correctly, and position the filter as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • For under gravel filters: Lay the filter plate on the bottom of the tank before adding substrate. After that, connect the uplift tubes to the filter plates and ensure they are positioned correctly to allow water flow.

4. Turn on the filter

After everything is hooked up and in place, turn on the filter and observe it for a few minutes to ensure it is operating correctly. You should see water flowing through the filter and returning to the tank. There shouldn’t be too much noise but enough to know it’s functioning.

If you notice any unusual sounds or if water is not circulating properly, double-check the connections to make sure everything is secure.

5. Check your water regularly

Your filter should keep your water clear and healthy, but it doesn’t automatically protect your aquarium. If your filter isn’t working as it should be you need to be aware of it. Fish waste, plant matter, and uneaten food can easily accumulate over time, turning your tank into a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and algae.

Do a visual check every so often to make sure everything looks as it should. For added peace of mind you can test your water to make sure there are no underlying issues at play.
